Lake Crescent and Sol Duc

We decided to drive to Sol Duc and Highway 101 runs alongside the glacier-carved Lake Crescent that is a deep, freshwater lake. The water is so clear and is turquoise in color in the shallows. The lake reminds us of Lake Tahoe.
The picture below doesn't do the color of the water justice but if you look closely, you can see the water color change .

We had packed a lunch in hopes that we would find a beautiful spot to enjoy. We took the spur road off of Highway 101 to Sol Duc and found our special spot along the Sol Duc River. It was nice to enjoy lunch while hearing the rushing water and taking in the beautiful view. After several attempts, it was finally nice to be able to enjoy our lunch in a scenic area as we had planned. The chosen area was even set up with picnic tables. There was a couple there who had taken their chairs down to the rivers edge to enjoy the serenity. We wouldn't have even known they were there had we not seen them after checking out the area.

The area is just so scenic.

Further up the road, there was a parking area that led to a trail to Salmon Cascades. Normally, this time of year, there would be salmon spawning up this river. Sadly, due to overfishing, no salmon spawn up this river any more.

We drove up to Sol Duc Hot Springs. Basically, there is a cold spring and a hot spring all enclosed in a building. The area was very busy with tourists/locals.

We drove to the end of the road where there are hiking trails and had wanted to take the hike to Sol Duc Falls. As it was mid-afternoon, there was no parking available. Who knew that the area would be so busy. The next time we are in the area, we will get there early.

Later, we watched Michael Phelps win his 8th gold medal. What an amazing talent.
