We headed out for our new home for the week at the Hard Rain Café and RV Park which is located within the Hoh Rain Forest. The park is located 17 miles outside of Forks and 7 miles from the Hoh Rain Forest. We are in the boondocks. We have no cell phone coverage and no satellite coverage as we have a large tree dead center of where the satellite needs to aim. We can’t move backwards and we can’t move forward to try to connect. I really thought we would have a good shot at getting the satellite up and running . . . . Oh well. The plus is that our nightly cost for full hookups is $18.55. Pretty darn cheap but then again, they really couldn’t or shouldn’t charge any more than that.
We realize we are taking a gamble staying in the rain forest but August is suppose to be one of their dryer months ... we will be finding out. We wanted to stay within the Forks area to take in the sights. Once we were set up, we went in to Forks to the Visitor’s Center as they have free WIFI 24/7 inside and outside of the building (very nice). I sent out a couple of emails to Melissa and Bonnie to advise them our contact information in case of any emergency. While we were there, we picked up some nice literature on the area and were given some dining tips. We also found out that we, as fulltime RVers, are being called “affluent homeless”. Whoever these people are who give out titles just don't get it. To us fulltime RVers, anywhere we put down our jacks is home. I do know that we are “rich” in being able to see and experience America the way that we are. It is also a bonus in getting to meet so many people we would never have had the opportunity to meet.
I had noticed that when we came in to Forks that there were signs welcoming Twilighters and twilight this and that. We learned at the Visitor’s Center, that there is a series of books written for preteens and teenagers that is based in Forks that is causing quite the sensation nationwide. It is quite “the” thing to come to Forks and visit the sights mentioned in the books. They give “Twilight Tours” which takes one to the spots mentioned in the book. Who knew? We were told that a movie will be coming out at the holidays based on the first book. We are told that this will be as big as Harry Potter. I am now curious about the books but don’t want to pay the $20 for the hardback.
Another RVer came in to the park and set up one site over from us which makes a total of four rigs (two seem permanent). We ended up conversing for several hours into the evening with Dave and Joanna. We had to gather under their awning as it started to sprinkle on us which was just the indication of what was to come. It just poured all night long with no wind. Now, I understand from where the Hard Rain name came.
